The NBA announced the All-Defensive teams for the 2023 season, and it was no surprise to see Jaren Jackson Jr. headlining the first team as he was just recently crowned as the Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson Jr. was the backbone of the Memphis Grizzlies’ formidable defense, which allowed them to finish atop of the western conference this season.
Joining Jackson Jr. on the All-Defensive First Team were some of the league’s most elite defenders. Alex Caruso of the Chicago Bulls proved to be a valuable addition to the team’s defense, while Jrue Holiday and Brook Lopez of the Milwaukee Bucks were instrumental in the team’s regular season success. Evan Mobley, a standout sophomore for the Cleveland Cavaliers, rounds out the First Team.
The All-Defensive Second Team was equally impressive, with Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat leading the way. Adebayo was a force to be reckoned with on defense, earning his fourth consecutive All-Defensive Team selection. Joining him on the team were O.G. Anunoby of the Toronto Raptors, Dillon Brooks of the Memphis Grizzlies, Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, and Derrick White of the Boston Celtics.
Adebayo’s defensive contributions were vital to the Heat’s success this season and is on full display during this post-season run. He led the team in rebounds (46 times) and blocks (34) while setting career highs in offensive rebounds and steals. He finished the season leading the Heat in blocks, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, and total rebounds, while finishing second in steals. Adebayo’s impressive season earned him 13 First Team votes and 27 Second Team votes.
In addition to Adebayo, the rest of the All-Defensive teams were filled with elite defenders who have proven themselves on the court. O.G. Anunoby was a crucial piece of the Raptors’ defense, while Dillon Brooks was an instrumental part of the Grizzlies’ success. Draymond Green continues to be a dominant force for the Warriors, and Derrick White emerged as a standout defensive guard for the Celtics.
The NBA’s All-Defensive teams are a testament to the importance of defense in the league. These players have proven themselves to be some of the best defenders in the game, and their contributions have been critical to their respective teams’ success.
