The Oakland Athletics have made a significant move, as they recently announced that they have reached a binding agreement to purchase 49 acres of land near the Las Vegas Strip for a whopping $1.5 billion stadium. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “The stadium will include a 30,000-seat stadium with a partially retractable roof, with discussions for other potential developments such as restaurants and an amphitheater.”
The announcement has garnered a lot of excitement, especially from the residents of Las Vegas, as the city has been making strides in obtaining sports teams in recent years. The Raiders (NFL) relocated in 2020, the Aces (WNBA) in 2018, and the Knights (NHL) had their inaugural season in 2017-18. With the addition of the Athletics, Las Vegas is well on its way to becoming a sports town.
The MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred, showed his support for the Athletics’ move to Las Vegas. He stated, “We support the A’s turning their focus on Las Vegas and look forward to them bringing finality to this process by the end of the year.” The Athletics leaving Oakland is an end of an era, as they have been there since 1968, winning four World Series titles, including their three-peat from 1972-1974.
This move is not just significant for the Athletics but also for the city of Oakland. The city has lost all of its iconic sports franchises in the past three years, with the Golden State Warriors moving to their new arena, the Chase Center, in the San Francisco Bay area, and the Raiders leaving the city for the second time.
As of now, the Athletics are set to make their debut in Las Vegas in 2025. This gives the team plenty of time to prepare for their move and settle in their new home. The city of Las Vegas is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Athletics and the start of a new chapter in their sports history.
