This NBA trade season is about to become an arms race if the rumor regarding Atlanta’s superstar point guard, Trae Young is true.
According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, “Rival executives in attendance at the NBA’s annual G League Winter Showcase are of the belief that Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young could be the next player on a rookie max extension to request a trade if the team doesn’t make inroads come postseason time.”
The report from Haynes came shortly after the Hawks loss to the Bulls at the buzzer (110-108), Wednesday night. Young has been on a tear as of late putting up 31 points, 37 points, and 34 points in his last three games. On the season Young is currently averaging 27.6 points per game, 9.8 assists while shooting for 41.1% from the field and 30.7% from three. Despite Young’s astonishing performances, the Hawks (16-16) find themselves in the latter half of the playoff caliber teams in this tight eastern conference.
Young (24 years old) is locked into a five-year contract extension worth $215MM that was signed this past summer with an early termination option after the 2025-26 NBA season.
What makes this report even more intriguing is the fact that the writings may already be on the wall as Young missed a game earlier this month against the Nuggets due to a heated exchange with coach Nate McMillan. Following such exchange between the player and coach the Hawks had reassigned their President of Basketball Operations, Travis Schlenk to an Advisory earlier this week.
At the end of the day this rumor is just pure speculation as there have been countless amounts of disgruntled superstar players that nothing ever came about when it came to trade talks. For example, look no further than when Kobe Bryant was displeased and apparently demanded a trade from the Lakers and nothing ever came about. However, if Young were to get traded he would be the most coveted player across the league as his skillset and offensive prowess would tremendously bolster a contending team.
