Monday night, a matchup between two AFC rivals, the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals turned out to be a heartbreaker for all the wrong reasons. Bills safety Damar Hamlin was in critical condition and collapsed on the field after making a tackle against Bengals receiver Tee Diggins.

On the play Diggins had dropped his shoulder into Hamlin’s chest area causing blunt trauma which may have resulted in commotio cordis. According to AHA Journals, commotio cordis is best described as “a phenomenon in which a sudden blunt impact to the chest causes sudden death in the absence of cardiac damage.”

It was a horrific sight to say the least, as both teams gathered around the midfield with an unconscious Hamlin. During the 15 minutes that Hamlin lied on the ground, the paramedics were required to provide both CPR and an AED to be used on him. Hamlin was then carried out on a stretcher and transported to a local Cincinnati hospital for further evaluations. In a tweet by Jordon Rooney who is Hamlin’s friend and marketing rep, he states “His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests.”

Additionally, the NFL made the following statement regarding tonight’s incident.

“Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.”

“Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Along with the statement that the NFL put out, they made the right call and decided to postpone tonight’s matchup for the time being.

Since then many players and organizations have tweeted out their condolences to Hamlin and his family.

“The thoughts and prayers of all of Bills Mafia are supporting you, Damar.” the Bills tweeted.

Bills quarterback, Josh Alen tweeted “Please pray for our brother.”

Free agent wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. tweeted “God be wit D Hamlin right now!!”

“Sending our thoughts and prayers to Damar” the Bengals tweeted.

Hamlin’s toy drive fundraiser on GoFundMe has also seen a tremendous amount of support with over $1,800,000 being donated in the last few hours with the original goal at $2,500.
